Nine Dots Studio confirms the survival RPG sequel is coming to Steam Early Access, promising a brutal, grounded adventure built on community feedback.
Nine Dots Studio has officially announced that Outward 2 will launch in early access on PC on February 8, 2027, arriving via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. The news came with a brand-new trailer during the Triple-i Initiative showcase on October 8, 2026.
The date marks a delay from the studio's original target of July 7, 2026, which was pushed back in June to focus on stability and performance following beta feedback. It's a familiar story in game development, but one that suggests Nine Dots is prioritizing quality over rushing an unfinished product out the door.
What's Included in the Early Access Build?
According to Notebookcheck's detailed report, Nine Dots expects the early access period to last 12 to 18 months before version 1.0, though that window could stretch depending on player feedback. That's a substantial runway for a game built on community iteration.
At launch, players will get:
- Three fully playable open-world regions in Aurai, plus a fourth that's playable but will be improved over time
- Three starting scenarios, each set in a different city
- Three questlines with three missions each (out of seven planned for 1.0)
- Six trainers to teach skills, with the ability to specialize in up to three classes at once
- Character creation with personality traits like Hoarder, Gourmet, and Lone Wolf that affect dialogue, starting gear, and initial aptitudes
Early access will be discounted compared to the full release, though no price has been announced yet. The studio has been clear on this front: they're grateful for early supporters and want to reward them for taking a chance on an unfinished game.
Survival, Co-op, and That Signature Outward Brutality
If you played the original Outward, you know what you're getting into. The sequel keeps that grounded, punishing approach where you're not a chosen hero—you're just an ordinary adventurer trying to survive.
No mounts. No fast travel. No scaled encounters. Hunger, thirst, exhaustion, and weather can kill you as readily as monsters can. Backpack weight matters, and you can drop your pack mid-fight to stay nimble—a mechanic that's equal parts tactical and terrifying.
Constant auto-saving discourages reckless decisions, and an optional Hardcore mode gives every defeat a 20% chance of deleting your save entirely. If that sounds brutal, that's the point.
Co-op works both online and in split-screen, with drop-in, drop-out play. No matchmaking, though—you'll need to bring your own friends. The studio sees co-op as a way to add chaos, laughter, and shared stories to the journey, not to make things easier.
Why Early Access Makes Sense for Nine Dots
The Steam page for Outward 2 reveals a developer genuinely committed to a healthy work culture. In their own words:
"Making an ambitious open-world survival RPG like Outward 2 with a small team is a huge undertaking, and we're under no illusions about the effort required. As a studio that opposes overtime and crunch, we focus on investing time in quality rather than blindly chasing quantity—so we can deliver something special without burning out the team."
They also noted that unlike the first game, which expanded through DLC after launch, Outward 2 will use early access to present the core game and early content to players, letting feedback shape the final product. It's a mature approach that respects both developers and players.
PC System Requirements
The specs are refreshingly reasonable, especially in an era of ballooning hardware demands:
Minimum:
- Windows 10
- Ryzen 3 1300X
- 8 GB RAM
- GeForce GTX 960
- 25 GB storage
Recommended:
- Windows 11
- Ryzen 5 5600X
- 16 GB RAM
- GeForce RTX 3060
- 25 GB storage
Nine Dots also offers a "Potato mode" for hardware below the minimum spec. They don't guarantee full gameplay parity, but they say the game should be playable. That's a thoughtful touch for players with older rigs.
The Bottom Line
Outward 2 is shaping up to be exactly what fans of the original wanted: more of the same grounded, unforgiving survival RPG gameplay, but bigger and refined with community input. The February 2027 early access launch gives the studio time to polish the experience, and the discount for early adopters is a nice gesture of appreciation.
If you're tired of power fantasies and want an RPG where every decision matters—where your character is just another mortal trying to make their way in a hostile world—this one's worth keeping on your radar.
