Tesla reports a massive increase in battery capacity ahead of the much awaited event

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, pointed out that in three to four years, the US electric vehicle maker could produce batteries with 50% more energy density, making aircraft electric.

Musk's comments came in the form of speculation about the announcement of the next Tesla event (Battery Day), when people expected him to reveal how to improve battery performance.

On Monday, Musk wrote on Twitter: "Making batteries with an energy density of 400 Wh / kg and high current flow - a lot; not just a test - not out of reach, it can take 3-4 years."

The energy density of the Panasonic 2170 battery used in the Tesla 3 model is about 260 W / kg, which corresponds to a 50% increase in energy density over the current energy density, which is essential for long trips, the researchers said. .

Musk said last year that the energy density of the battery must be increased to more than 400 watts / kg for electric aircraft to operate. This is a threshold that can be reached within five years. The electric vehicle maker also showed an image that observers viewed as a sign of advanced technology that could dramatically increase power density and battery life.

Panasonic previously reported to Reuters that the energy density of the 2,170 batteries originally supplied to Tesla would increase by 20% within five years.

Tesla is also working with Chinese company Amperex Technology to introduce a new type of low-cost, long-life battery into Chinese Model 3 vehicles later this year or early next year. The battery has an estimated life of one million miles. Reuters last May.

Tesla announced that Battery Day will be held on September 22, the same day as the 2020 annual general meeting.
