Old Microsoft Edge browser is no longer supported

Microsoft today announced the end of support for the Edge Edge browser, an older version of EdgeHTML, which is an alternative to Internet Explorer 11.

The company said: Our new and modern browser first appeared more than a year ago and can now be found on hundreds of millions of devices.

She added: In August of last year, we announced that support for the old Microsoft Edge browser will end on March 9, 2021. This is part of the migration to the new version of Microsoft Edge. This support officially ends today and is no longer available. Receive future security updates.

Microsoft previously announced that the Cumulative Update, upon its arrival in April, will replace the old Microsoft Edge browser across Windows 10 with the new Microsoft Edge browser.

The software giant offers FastTrack support for businesses that need help moving to the new Microsoft Edge browser, and it's free for companies with eligible Microsoft 365 accounts.

The old Microsoft Edge browser was originally called Spartan and was included as the operating system's default web browser in Windows 10 before it was officially called Edge.

The company had previously announced in December 2018 that it would replace its Edge browser with a new browser for the Chromium engine. After more than a year, Edge Chromium is fully available in January 2020.

Starting next month, the old browser will be removed as part of the Tuesday update, and the change will also be made in the preview update, which will start later this month.

This change does not affect the still supported WebView, which is already used in many hosted web applications and some applications that need to view the web.

Although you can move apps to Chromium-based WebView 2, these apps won't work anymore.

If you are still using your old browser, you will not be considered safe until next month as the final security update will be released today, and you will be ready to switch browsers next month.

In many ways, the new Microsoft Edge browser offers great performance benefits, but it kills Microsoft's custom web rendering engine that goes back to previous versions of Internet Explorer.
