Microsoft is developing a new flagship notebook computer, the Surface Book 4, which could be available this fall.

Many people expect this new laptop to replace the Surface Book, which has been Microsoft's flagship line of laptops since it debuted in 2015.

Details about the Surface Book 4 are still very few. But the current patent can give us an initial idea of what the company is looking for.

Sources say that this new laptop has a non-removable screen. The patent document supports this information and the projected screen can slide forward like a Surface Studio.

The patent shows that the hinges used in laptops are similar to those found in the HP Elite Folio and HP Specter Folio.

The company's non-removable design could also allow for more powerful chipsets to be installed. The current Surface Book design enables U-series processors with a maximum of 4 cores.

Most laptops have six or even eight core processor options, like Dell XPS 15- and 17-inch laptops.

The new computer can also be equipped with an NVIDIA RTX graphics card, a larger touchpad, a diagonal screen of about 14 inches, a high dynamically adjusted refresh rate and a 3:2 aspect ratio.

The Surface Book 4 is also one of the first devices to run Windows 11, which includes many new features that the new device can take advantage of, such as:

  •     Dynamic refresh rate: This feature allows for a higher refresh rate, such as 90Hz or 120Hz. However, if there is no movement on the screen, it can be reduced to 60 Hz. This saves a bit of battery power when the screen is running at a higher refresh rate.
  •     New Haptic Surface Pen: Windows 11 supports the smart stylus with haptic feedback, which allows the stylus to use different textures on different types of paper to simulate handwriting. Surface Book 4 can support the new Surface Pen with Haptic.

Microsoft hasn't announced any new hardware, so there's no official release or launch date. However, Microsoft still hosts hardware events in the fall, usually in October. The same should happen this year.

Let's say the device was released in October. In some markets, the Surface Book 4 may not ship until the end of October. And in other markets in the coming months.

Due to the global shortage of chips, it is not clear in which markets the Surface Book 4 will be sold outside the United States.

Microsoft is also expected to release more devices in October. Including Surface Duo 2 and Surface Pro 8.
