With new material technology and accumulated coating technology, LG has developed new technologies that can be used in foldable displays while seriously entering the new generation materials market.

The company announced that it has developed a cover window called Real Folding Window for foldable computing devices that uses a specially developed shell material to make the glass surface tough, while the foldable parts have similar flexibility to plastic.

The cover window is made of a basic material on the outside of the PC that protects the screen from impact while providing a clear image. It has the characteristics of toughness, permeability and bending, which makes it flexible and bendable.

A company spokesperson said: “Unlike current polyimide films and tempered glass materials, the cover window with LG’s new packaging technology increases flexibility and provides improved solutions for foldable mobile phones, for example to alleviate chronic problems.”

Real Folding Window is coated on both sides of the PET film with a new material with a thickness of up to tens of micrometers. It is a thin plastic that can improve the heat resistance and mechanical properties of plastic materials. It is thinner than existing tempered glass and has the same hardness. But the entire screen did not crack.

Its price competitiveness is better than that of the current polyimide film. Due to its excellent flexibility, the durability can be maintained even after being bent more than 200,000 times.

In addition, the company has significantly improved the folding line of the foldable part of the screen.

In addition, PET laminated film is also suitable for tablets, laptops and mobile phones with foldable screens.

The company identified customer needs such as slim and clean appearance and stable folding function. It is expected to have massive production capabilities in 2022 and start wholesale in 2023.

In addition, the company said, “With Real Folding Window, we can be one step closer to addressing customer weaknesses.” We have received proposals for joint ventures from several clients.

She added, "We are strengthening our partnerships with leading companies in the smartphone industry. We are now expanding our mobile market. We are moving into new foldable applications such as laptops and tablets."

According to Omdia, a global research firm. The foldable mobile phone market is expected to grow from 3.5 million in 2020 to 50 million in 2026.
