Discord shuts down NFT project after community reaction

CEO Jason Citron said Discord has no plans to add NFT integration in the near future. Clarification was provided after a tweet from Citron on November 8th caused unrest that lasted for a few days.

In response to investor Bucky McCormick's news, the CEO posted a screenshot of an unprecedented version of Discord integrated with two cryptocurrency wallet apps, MetaMask and WalletConnect.

He said at the time: Probably nothing. According to reports, the term is an acronym for what's to come in the NFT community. I understand. But citron almost certainly did not imagine it.

His tweets quickly attracted angry users of the platform, who informed Citron that they would cancel their subscription to Nitro, a paid service that helped the platform stay free if the company added crypto integration.

The Twitter user succinctly summed up the feelings of many people. He said, “I can't wait to tell my friends that Discord is promoting MLM with high environmental costs and convincing them to cancel Nitro subscriptions and use competing platforms.”

Citrons' tweets sparked internal resistance from the platform's employees. This has led some studios to threaten to relocate their communities.

Discord focuses on reducing spam and fraud

The reaction was so violent that the citron had to react. He said on Twitter: Thank you for your comments. We do not currently intend to introduce this internal concept. Web3 has many advantages. But there are also many problems that we have to solve. Our goal is to provide more information as quickly as possible.

In a statement, the platform said, “We appreciate all the points we heard in response to the internal concept that you may have seen in a tweet earlier this week, and we would like to make it clear that we do not currently intend to provide it.”

“We are excited about the possibilities of Web3 technology and the positive way these communities come together on our platform, especially those who organize green projects with a focus on designs.” However, we are also aware of some issues. It must be resolved by us. For now, we focus on protecting users from spam, scams, and fraud.

While the screenshots are a pre-release model of the built-in look of a crypto wallet, Discord is actively exploring how blockchain technology can complement its existing roles.

While the platform is re-evaluating how best to align its values with the communities in which it resides, some of this work has been put on hold.

However, no company likes rejection. But the negative reaction to Discord's budding interest in cryptocurrency shows how much the company's users love its existing products.
