OPPO announces Air Glass augmented reality device

OPPO launched the Air Glass, an AR device that supports four different user interactions through touch, sound, head and hand movements, allowing users to get the information they need faster and easier.

The devices will go on sale at the beginning of next year. The company describes Air Glass as a product of augmented reality, not augmented reality, which means that 2D information is displayed in your field of vision rather than overlaying 3D objects on the real world.

The company said, "OPPO has long researched the possibility of extended reality XR. With Air Glass, we have created a smart glass product that is easy for consumers to use. Air Glass will completely change the way we think. And consuming the screen can be the most important presenting the information we need right in front of our eyes Directly, with Air Glass the world will never be the same.

The Air Glass is equipped with a Snapdragon 4100 processor with a total weight of 30 grams. The company said it should be able to last for 3 hours and be on standby for 40 hours. Air Glass is one of the lightest single waveguide devices in the industry and can be worn like regular eyeglasses.

The self-designed Spark Micro-Viewer is equipped with advanced micro-LED technology and five ultra-clear glass lenses and delivers a revolutionary augmented reality experience.

By integrating Spark micro and micro LED display devices and custom waveguide technology, Air Glass can deliver clear, bright content whether worn indoors or outdoors, making for a great experience for everyone.

There are two frame designs, a silver half frame and a black full frame, each in two sizes. Inside the frame is a magnetic connector that can be attached to conventional eyeglasses.

The screen uses a Spark Micro Projector, which is equipped with Micro-LED technology and can deliver a brightness of up to 3 million lumens.

Oppo plans to enter China early next year

Oppo says the actual average brightness is 1,400 nits. This ensures a clear and sharp visual representation in various lighting conditions.

Air Glass can be used with the Smart Glass app on OPPO Watch and any company smartphone running ColorOS 11 or higher. It also supports four intuitive modes of interaction: touch, sound, hand gestures, and head movement.

The Air Glass use cases offered by the company seem to be relatively few. The company said it can be used for notifications and instructions, as well as for functions like remote scheduling and real-time translation.

Air Glass uses optical waveguides and supports two display modes with 16 grayscale levels and 256 grayscale levels.

In addition, two layers of sapphire crystal are used to cover the waveguide on both sides for added transparency and protection.

The company said Air Glass will come to market in a limited edition in the first quarter of 2022 and will only be sold in China, at least initially.

Air Glass is part of the company's annual Innovation Day. Oppo also revealed its first in-house NPU chip, MariSilicon X, designed to improve machine learning imaging performance. It will appear in the flagship Oppo Find X, which will be launched in the market in the first quarter of next year.

Last week, the company also confirmed the launch of the first Oppo Find N foldable smartphone in an article by Pete Lau, Product Manager and CEO of OnePlus.

The device combines a large foldable internal screen with a smaller external screen and can be used like a traditional smartphone.
