China's ZTE has launched a new phone, the Axon 40 Ultra, which features the company's third-generation front camera built into the bottom of the UD display, and this time around the company appears to be confident enough in the technology to position itself as the Ultra model.

Previously, UD cameras were the Axon 20 5G and Axon 30 5G cameras. The phone has a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a density of 400 pixels per inch, a resolution of 1116 x 2480 pixels, and a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

ZTE used a new UDC Pro chip to power the display and placed new sub-pixels on top of the camera to make the area more uniform. This is a 10-bit map with 100% DCI-P3 coverage. It's also very bright, with 1,500 nits of brightness and 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.

The Axon 40 Ultra offers a 64MP triple camera, a wide-angle camera, and an ultra-wide-angle camera with a dedicated Sony IMX787 sensor. The selfie camera features a 16 MP sensor with 1.12 µm pixels.

The main camera is equipped with a 7P lens with an aperture of f/1.6 and a focal length of 35mm. It also includes optical image stabilization and multi-directional autofocus.

The 64MP ultra-wide-angle camera features a 16mm (f/2.35) lens with autofocus. With it, he can take macro shots at a distance of 4 cm. Both units use a dedicated Sony IMX787 sensor.

With up to 64MP telephoto, it has a periscope lens with a focal length of 91mm, f/3.5 aperture, and optical image stabilization. There is also a 3D ToF sensor to support focus and a flicker sensor.

The new ZTE device can record 8K videos with all three rear cameras. It also keeps all three cameras active at the same time, allowing you to quickly switch between focal lengths.

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra arrives in the Middle East

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM. But you can also get 12GB or even 16GB (LPDDR5).

16GB is exclusive to the 1TB storage version, with 512GB and 256GB (UFS 3.1) options available as well. The device is kept cool by a large steam room.

The phone has a large 5000mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging via USB-C. The Type-C port also handles audio output.

The Snapdragon Sound Platform handles audio processing and supports DTS:X Ultra for stereo speakers.

The 8/128GB version costs $800. There is also a 12/256 GB version for $900.

The version launched in China has 16GB of RAM, 512GB and even 1TB of storage. However, these versions will not be available worldwide.
