Sony Unveils PXW-Z300: A 4K Powerhouse with AI Smarts for Pro Shooters

Sony just dropped a game-changer for documentary crews, event videographers, and broadcast professionals. Meet the PXW-Z300 – a new 4K/60p XDCAM camcorder packing a 17x zoom, triple 1/2-inch CMOS sensors, and groundbreaking AI-driven subject tracking. Announced today, this handheld beast aims to redefine run-and-gun production with specs that punch far above its weight class.

The Triple Threat

At its core, the Z300 leverages three 1/2-inch Exmor R CMOS sensors – a notable upgrade from its predecessors – delivering crisp 4K/60p footage with reduced noise in low light. The newly developed 17x zoom lens (29.3mm-499mm equivalent) maintains f/1.9 brightness throughout its range, critical for fast-paced shoots where lighting control is limited.

But the real headliner? Sony’s AI Auto Framing technology. Using deep learning algorithms, the camera intelligently identifies and tracks subjects (human or animal) even in crowded scenes. Forget manual focus pulls during chaotic events – the Z300 locks onto targets autonomously, adjusting focus and composition as they move.

"This isn’t just autofocus 2.0," said Sony’s Product Manager, Lisa Tanaka. "It’s a collaborative tool that handles technical distractions so creators focus on storytelling."

Workflow Warrior

Built for the grind, the Z300 supports XAVC-L recording (4:2:2 10-bit) to SD cards or via dual XLR inputs for broadcast-grade audio. It also includes:

  • 16-axis color correction
  • Wi-Fi/5G connectivity for live streaming
  • HLG/PQ HDR support
  • 12G-SDI output

Behind the Tech

According to Sony’s press release, the AI system was trained on thousands of hours of sports and wildlife footage to ensure reliable tracking amid motion blur or occlusions. Paired with face/eye detection, it promises to be a solo shooter’s secret weapon.
