Funk is Back: ToeJam & Earl Co-Creator Confirms "ToeJam & Earl 5" is in Development

For fans of funky aliens and chaotic co-op, the universe just got a little brighter. Greg Johnson, the visionary co-creator behind the beloved Sega Genesis series ToeJam & Earl, has officially confirmed that a fifth game is in the early stages of development, signaling a vibrant future for the hip-hop duo.

The exciting news broke not at a major press conference, but in a more intimate setting: a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything). While promoting his new Kickstarter project, Dancing with Ghosts, Johnson was directly asked by a hopeful fan about the possibility of another ToeJam & Earl adventure. His response was music to their ears.

“I can say that the new game is in the planning stage,” Johnson stated. “We intend to make it happen.”

This confirmation, found in the middle of a wide-ranging Reddit discussion, has sent a wave of excitement through the gaming community. It comes nearly five years after the successful Kickstarter revival, ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove (2019), and promises a return to the series' roots.

A Return to Form: Embracing the Funk of the Originals

According to Johnson, the planned fifth installment aims to capture the magic of the original duology. For the uninitiated, the first ToeJam & Earl game (1991) was a groundbreaking roguelike where players explored randomly generated levels on Earth, hunting for scattered pieces of their wrecked spaceship. Its 1993 sequel, Panic on Funkotron, took a sharp turn into a side-scrolling platformer.

The new game, Johnson suggests, will blend the best elements from both of those classic titles while also resurrecting long-lost design ideas from a never-realized follow-up to Panic on Funkotron. This indicates a deliberate effort to deliver the experience longtime fans have been craving for decades.

New Leadership, Guided by a Legend

While Greg Johnson will provide creative oversight, day-to-day development will be handled by a third-party studio. Steering the ship as producer will be Anthony “Nap” Napolitano, a veteran who worked on Back in the Groove and whom Johnson proudly calls one of the “TJ&E superstars.”

This structure allows Johnson to guide the project's vision while entrusting the hands-on creation to a trusted team deeply familiar with the franchise's unique charm.

A Legacy of Creative Freedom

During the AMA, Johnson reflected on the series' origins, explaining that the first game was born from a desire to "cut loose" after working on more structured, serious titles like Starflight. “I wasn’t trying to make something that the market would want or that would sell,” he confessed, crediting supportive collaborators like Mark Voorsanger and original Sega producer Matt Conn for helping the quirky project see the light of day.

That risk paid off. While the original ToeJam & Earl moved a respectable 350,000 units in North America—a solid figure for such an unconventional game—its true impact was cultural. It became a definitive cult classic, cherished for its randomized gameplay, hilarious presentation, and genre-blending hip-hop soundtrack.

The franchise has had its ups and downs, with the shift to a platformer in the second game dividing fans and the poorly received 3D sequel, Mission to Earth, leading to a long dormancy. The successful Back in the Groove Kickstarter proved the enduring love for the funky aliens, and now, with a clear plan and a passionate team, the future for ToeJam & Earl looks funkier than ever.

While no release window or target platforms have been announced, one thing is clear: Greg Johnson and his team intend to make it happen. And for a community that has kept the funk alive for over 30 years, that’s the best news imaginable.
