The MoMA Design Store has added another Casio collaboration to its shelves, and this one is likely to catch the eye of both watch collectors and design nerds. The new release is a square G-Shock inspired by a Casio calculator—specifically, the Casio Film Card Solar Calculator. It is a MoMA Design Store exclusive, limited to just 1,000 units, and priced at $135. MoMA members can pick it up for $121.50.
A Calculator From MoMA’s Own Collection
The design reference here is Casio’s Film Card Solar Calculator, a credit-card-thin device that currently sits in MoMA’s architecture and design collection. The MoMA Design Store copy dates the calculator to 1984, though the museum’s own collection entry lists the SL-800 version as a 1982 design that was gifted by Casio in 1986. That small date discrepancy is the kind of detail that tends to fascinate collectors, but either way, the calculator’s minimalist, futuristic look clearly left a mark.
Retro Calculator Colors on a Tough G-Shock Body
The watch borrows the calculator’s red, cyan, and chartreuse accents. A chartreuse ring surrounds the LCD, while the alarm and stopwatch labels at the top right are printed in red. The MoMA logo above the display gets a cyan treatment, and the backlight also displays that logo. Casio fans will notice the back of the original calculator recreated on the strap loop, while the caseback is engraved. Even the box references the calculator’s 1984 packaging, which helps the whole package feel like a proper design object rather than just another colorway.

Under the Retro Details, It’s a Standard Square G-Shock
Apart from the calculator-inspired touches, this is a regular square G-Shock at heart. The resin case measures 48.9 x 42.8 x 13.4 mm, which matches the DW-5600 exactly. MoMA does not explicitly name the base reference or list the module’s functions, though. The crystal is mineral glass, and the resin strap is 25 mm wide at the case and 195 mm long without the case and buckle. Water resistance is rated at 200 meters, and shock resistance is standard G-Shock fare. MoMA also says the watch is made in Japan.
If you are looking for a standard square G-Shock rather than the limited MoMA edition, the Casio G-Shock GWM5610U-1B is available on Amazon. It is not the same calculator-themed release, but it offers the familiar rugged square-case formula that many G-Shock fans already know and trust.
Availability and What Comes Next
The watch is listed as in stock on the MoMA Design Store’s US site, with in-store pickup available at the Midtown and SoHo shops in New York. MoMA also says international shipping is available through special order. There is no word yet on whether Casio will sell it through its own stores, which means the MoMA Design Store may remain the only official place to buy it—at least for now.
For collectors, the appeal is obvious. It combines Casio’s calculator heritage, MoMA’s design credibility, and the toughness of a G-Shock in one package. With only 1,000 units available, it may not stay in stock for long. If you want one, the safer move is to check the MoMA Design Store sooner rather than later.
