Microsoft has started rolling out a fresh batch of features to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles through the Xbox Insider program, and while none of them involve a blockbuster exclusive, the update could quietly improve daily console life for a lot of players. Wider availability is expected before the end of the year.
The update touches Remote Play, voice chat, startup animations, profile customization, local search, and cloud gaming downloads. The common thread? Microsoft is smoothing out the small friction points that add up over time.
Remote Play Finally Gets a Sharpness Boost
The biggest upgrade is Remote Play streaming. Xbox Series X|S users in the Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha Insider rings can now test streaming at resolutions up to 1440p, with higher video bitrates. Microsoft says the goal is sharper visuals and smoother gameplay on supported devices, including PCs, phones, and TVs. Remote Play still doesn’t require an extra subscription, but quality depends on the device and network connection. If your Wi-Fi is weak, 1440p won’t magically fix it.
Voice Clarity Cuts the Noise
A new Voice Clarity setting aims to reduce background noise during party chat and in-game voice communication. It’s enabled by default for most titles released since 2020, but users can manually change the setting. That should be welcome for players with noisy keyboards, fans, or family members in the background.
Startup Animations Are Now Your Choice
Microsoft is also giving Xbox owners more control over the startup experience. Insiders can choose from startup animations dating back to the Xbox One generation through the current Xbox Series X|S era, rather than being stuck with a single animation. The setting lives under Settings > System > Startup, and you can also decide whether the startup animation plays with sound.

More Control Over Profile Badges
Profile customization gets a small but meaningful boost. Players can now select up to five badges to display on their profile card and can hide individual badges from public view. It’s a minor change, but it gives players more say over how they present themselves online.
Local Search Gets Faster and Smarter
Search functionality has been reworked as well. A new local search tool lets players look things up directly, extending to official club achievement lists and personal achievement history. The search works alongside Microsoft’s existing filtering and sorting tools, which could make large libraries and achievement lists considerably easier to navigate.
Cloud Gaming Downloads Keep Going
Finally, Xbox now allows downloads to continue in the background while players stream games through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The feature builds on an earlier Insider capability that allowed users to stream while a game was installing or updating. Microsoft says the change should reduce waiting times, with Xbox Series X|S users expected to see the biggest gains.
Why This Update Matters
These aren’t headline-grabbing features, but they reflect the kind of polish that can make a console feel better every day. Faster search, clearer chat, customizable startup animations, and the ability to download while streaming all remove small annoyances. For Xbox Insider members, the test build is available now in select rings. Everyone else will likely have to wait until later this year, when Microsoft plans to roll the features out more broadly.
As always, Insider features can change before wide release. Some may arrive in a different form, and others may take longer to reach all users. But if the current build is any indication, Xbox Series X|S owners have a solid quality-of-life update to look forward to.
