Samsung is developing roll-and-sliding screens

Samsung has confirmed that it is developing sliding and openable screens, similar to LG's efforts at CES 2021, to cement its market leadership in 2021.

A recently released patent indicates that Samsung is developing other types of screens for smartphones, including sliding and display screens.

Cui Kwon-yong, Vice President of Samsung Display, said, “Samsung is expanding its leadership position in the small and medium-sized foldable screen market this year.

Young added that there are currently foldable and foldable screens in the market, and that Samsung is the first to use the new technology to expand its product portfolio and customers.

Samsung is using technologies such as variable refresh rate and low power consumption to keep up with the competition in the OLED market.

In the event that remote services rise due to the coronavirus pandemic, attempts are also being made to promote the benefits of OLEDs. This phenomenon is being applied to more laptops, tablets, and cars.

All mobile phone models use OLED screens, including the new iPhone 12 series.

“Samsung’s first rotating and sliding screens will be on the market this year,” Young said. Samsung's mobile division is expected to be the first to adopt these technologies. However, this has not been clearly confirmed.

With large screens, Samsung has been working hard to develop QD quantitative display over time and build a stable customer base so that the technology can enter the evolving market.

The company continues to provide customized LCD screens. The original goal of Samsung Display is to complete the production of LCD screens in 2020. However, production will continue to depend on the requirements of Samsung and other customers.

Samsung Display posted the highest quarterly profit in the last quarter, driven by strong demand for OLED smartphones and the increase in the average selling price of large screens in televisions.

The company announced fourth-quarter revenue of 9.96 trillion won and operating income of 1.75 trillion won.

Compared to 2019, Samsung Display's total sales in 2020 were about 30.59 trillion won and its operating income was 2.24 trillion won, down 2% and increasing by 42%, respectively.

Although there is no foldable smartphone on the market currently, it is not difficult to see why it is more attractive than foldable phones.

The drop-down screen, based on the implementation currently presented, can keep the mobile slim and visible, while the foldable smartphone is bulky.
