Samsung announces new processors for smart watches

Samsung has announced its new mobile processor Exynos W920. The new processor includes an LTE modem, an industry first to be built using a 5nm manufacturing process, and is capable of delivering the powerful and efficient performance that next-generation mobile devices demand.

The company said that wearable devices such as smart watches are no longer just accessories. Now, staying healthy, safe and alert is an increasingly important part of our way of life.

"With the Exynos W920, future mobile devices can deliver apps with a visually appealing user interface and a more responsive user experience, while also allowing you to stay connected via fast LTE."

The Exynos W920 has an Arm Cortex-A55 core for high performance and energy-efficient processing. Compared with the Arm Mali-G68 GPU, the processor performance has increased by about 20% and the graphics performance has increased tenfold compared to the previous generation.

Exynos W920 has improved core and performance to make applications run faster. In addition, it also supports a 3D interactive graphic user interface to use screens on all devices with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels.

While incorporating the latest features and improvements, the processor is packaged in the smallest portable FO-PLP case on the market today.

The technology includes Exynos W920 power management integrated circuits, PMIC and LPDDR4 as well as eMMC integrated media cards specified in the same package with SiP-ePoP.

In addition, the small size of the processor allows smart watches to put larger batteries or bring a more elegant design.

AOD is widely used for wearable devices, especially smart watches. This is because you can easily and quickly check the time, notifications, missed calls, etc. without having to wake the watch from sleep mode.

The Exynos W920 does not supply power to the main processor, but rather activates the dedicated low-power Cortex-M55 display processor. Compared to the previous Exynos model, this reduces the power consumption of the display in AOD mode.

On the other hand, the Exynos W920 is equipped with a 4G LTE Cat.4 modem to provide a seamless calling experience when traveling.

There is also a GNSS L1 global satellite navigation system for tracking speed, distance and altitude during outdoor activities.

In addition, the Exynos W920 supports a new unified platform for wearable devices developed in collaboration with Google. It was first implemented in the upcoming Galaxy Watch model.
