| Xiaomi Watch S5 |
If you are in the market for a new smartwatch, the Xiaomi Watch S5 (available here on Amazon) is likely on your radar. It offers a sleek design and a host of features, but there is one significant area where potential buyers need to tread carefully: contactless payments.
On paper, the Xiaomi Watch S5 checks the box for modern convenience. It features built-in NFC hardware, which technically allows for contactless payments. However, the reality of using this feature is far more complicated than you might expect, especially if you live in Europe or the UK.
How Xiaomi Pay Works (and Where It Fails)
Instead of relying on the widely adopted Google ecosystem, Xiaomi uses its own proprietary payment service, known as Xiaomi Pay. According to Xiaomi’s official documentation, the system supports Visa and Mastercard networks across Europe.
However, the devil is in the details. The functionality of Xiaomi Pay is heavily dependent on your region and, more importantly, your specific bank. While the feature works well in some markets, the selection is notably restricted in others.
Take Germany as a prime example. Despite being a major market, many common German bank cards are not compatible with Xiaomi Pay. This creates a frustrating user experience. If you are used to the seamless integration of Google Wallet—where you can simply add almost any debit or credit card—you cannot expect the same flexibility with the Watch S5. Even if you already use a specific card with Google Wallet, there is no guarantee you can simply add that same card to the Xiaomi Watch S5.
The Missing Piece: Google Wallet
The most glaring omission in the Xiaomi Watch S5 is the lack of support for Google Wallet or Google Pay. For many Android users, Google Wallet is the standard for contactless payments. By excluding it, Xiaomi removes one of the most important and widely used methods of paying with a smartwatch.
Because of this limitation, the built-in NFC hardware can often feel underutilized. While it is technically possible to pay directly from your wrist, the feature is gated behind the compatibility of Xiaomi Pay. Unless your bank has a specific partnership or support for Xiaomi's service, the NFC chip becomes dead weight. The S5 is not a universal replacement for the convenience of using Google Wallet on your phone or a Wear OS watch.
What to Check Before You Buy
Xiaomi has also restricted NFC payments by region, meaning users need to do their homework before making a purchase.
Before you buy the Watch S5, it is crucial to verify whether your specific credit or debit card is supported by Xiaomi Pay in your country. If you happen to hold a compatible Mastercard, the experience can actually be quite positive. The card is stored securely on the watch, allowing you to make payments directly at the terminal without reaching for your phone. But for users outside this specific compatibility bubble, the experience will be disappointing.
The Verdict
The Xiaomi Watch S5 is a solid piece of hardware, but its payment capabilities are not universal. If you rely heavily on Google Wallet for your daily transactions, this watch will likely frustrate you. However, if you have a compatible bank card, it serves as a convenient tool for leaving your wallet at home. Just be sure to check the compatibility lists before you commit.
